There are many famous national and state parks in southern Utah surrounding Kanab, but there are also numerous hidden hikes around Kanab that aren’t famous and don’t get nearly the number of visitors. Many of these hidden gems are just as beautiful as the well-known national and state parks. Here are a few of our favorite hidden hikes near Kanab that are perfect to explore in the fall months.
The East Fork of the Virgin River is not well known but has some amazing slot canyon sections and is spectacular in the fall months. The North Fork of the Virgin River is much more famous and especially the Subway section of the north fork. This is a beautiful section of river with a spectacular slot canyon but has become very popular and is often crowded. For those adventure seekers that want to get off the beaten path and away from the crowds the East Fork of the Virgin River is a great alternative.
Just south of Kanab is a great area of rock formations called Toadstools. This is an amazing area for children to explore and play and is easy to access. It does not get much pressure or crowds. This is a great area to explore for families, since it easy to access and fun for children to play on the small rock formations. Those families that like to play in the outdoors and want to find an area that is quiet and away from the crowds will really enjoy Toadstools.
The Wave in Coyote Buttes National Monument is a very well-known area on the Utah/Arizona border that has amazing sandstone formations. Due to its popularity, it has gone to a lottery system to get a permit to hike this area and it has become very difficult to get a permit. There is another area south of Kanab called White Pocket that is much less known but has spectacular sandstone formations like the Wave. It is a remote area and a four-wheel drive vehicle or side by side is necessary to get to White Pocket. It is well worth the drive if you have a good four-wheel drive vehicle.
We hope to see you this fall at Grand Plateau Lodge for some great hikes and amazing views around Kanab, Utah!
