South of Kanab, Utah is some of the most spectacular geology and red rock canyons in the world. Families that enjoy exploring canyons and red rock formations will find this area one of the most interesting and enjoyable areas in the United States to spend time with their family exploring and finding new natural wonders. There are so many hidden gems in this area it would take a lifetime to see them all, but in this blog we will share some of our favorites.
Buckskin Gulch is one of the largest and longest narrows canyons in the world. It is only about 40 minutes south of Kanab, so it is easy to get to from Grand Plateau Lodge and RV Resort. This amazing slot canyon is about 23 miles long and in some places the canyon walls are about 500 feet tall. Groups that are athletic can hike the entire canyon in one day, but if you want to camp you will need to get a permit. Groups that do not feel up to hiking the entire canyon or have children in their group can use the Wirepass Trailhead which is a short one mile hike through the desert into the middle of the canyon. Once you are in the canyon you can hike either direction and explore this magnificent canyon for as long as you would like.

The Grand Canyon is about an hour south of Grand Plateau Lodge and RV Resort. It is one of the seven natural wonders of the world. This massive canyon is one of the largest in the world and has spectacular views down to the Colorado River about 5,000 feet below. Families that want to see this natural wonder can drive to the north rim of the Grand Canyon through the Kaibab National Forest. This area is higher elevation and there are pine trees and beautiful views from this area of the Grand Canyon. You may even see buffalo or elk that live in the area. Groups can also drive to Horseshoe Bend just below Page, Arizona where they can see the crystal clear water flow down the canyon below red rock walls in a large bend of the canyon.

Coyote Buttes is another amazing area south of Kanab. It is in the Paria Canyon-Vermillion Cliff Wilderness Area. It has amazing red rock formations and sandstone designs. The most famous area is known as the Wave where the sandstone has been carved and shaped by wind and water into wave-like formations. Families love to visit this area and see the amazing formations and designs.
